8i is a VR company trying to create holographic videos that users may interact with on their smartphones without the use of VR or AR headsets. The company has turned their soundstage into a big, cylindrical green screen space with 41 cameras set to capture holographic videos of people who want to give the technology a try.
According to The Verge, the company is looking to unveil its technology along with its mobile app called "Holo" at the Recode Code Media conference in Dana Point, California this week. Steve Raymond, 8i chief executive, will be present at the said conference to preview the pre-produced hologram that was made in the studio a few weeks back.
Earlier demos that have been made by the company still required a VR headset. However, the "Holo" smartphone app is supposedly going to change that. In this case, the app runs on the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro device equipped with Google's Tango software and custom sensor set.
The app scans and maps the dimensions of the room by using the phone's cameras and sensors. The users can now choose from a collection of pre-made holograms in the app such as a political impersonator, a celebrity or a dog. The hologram can be placed in the room that the user just scanned. Now, the user can walk up to the hologram using the phone's lens and see it up close. Users may also take a selfie with the hologram or shoot videos.
"Holo" is still in beta thus it still shows some pixilation. In addition, the app only works on the smartphone that has the Google Tango software.
Raymond stated that, "The scarcest resource we have in this industry is creativity. So we need to create easier, low-cost tools and give them to the people in the industry who can make great content."
