Sony had had a busy 2016 with the official product releases of various gaming consoles, namely, the PS VR, PS4 Pro, and PS4 Slim. Although the Internet has been constantly abuzz with speculations on a PlayStation 5 release date, the company has managed to keep mum about the device.

Michael Pachter, a gaming analyst, is convinced that the PlayStation 5 will be released two to three years from now. However, according to Gamepur, he expects Sony to keep from making any bold moves before Microsoft builds up with Project Scorpio.

“You know, I think Sony is probably going to wait and see what happens with the Scorpio,” Pachter said. “If the Scorpio puts pressure on them, and if it is really that much better, maybe they will accelerate.”

Microsoft has been quite aggressive about Sony’s most recent devices of late. Albert Penello, the senior director of Microsoft’s product management, is convinced that Project Scorpio is “the most powerful console ever made.” “We have got a killer product that beats their PS4 Slim on the low end,” Penello said.

Microsoft is reportedly scheduled to launch the device later this year. This could potentially give Sony more time to improve on its 4K resolution panel for the PlayStation 5. That said, the analyst is confident that 2020 is a very “good time” to launch the aforementioned gaming console. “I do not see 4K broadcast until 2020,” Pachter added. “I think 4K broadcast is what is going to cause people to switch their TVs over.”

In addition to 4K capabilities, Sony is also expected to develop on backward compatibility for its consoles. Each and every piece of software to be used for the PlayStation 5 “will have to work on the PS4 Pro.” Otherwise, it will turn out to be a massive disservice to patrons who recently purchased the PS4 Pro.
