On episode 77 of The 1099 via SoundCloud, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted the release year of Sony PlayStation 5. He posits that Sony's probably playing the waiting game now, given that the public's focus for now is on Microsoft's upcoming Project Scorpio.
Meanwhile, the PS5 website has used patterns, historical trends, credible leaks and other possible sources to puzzle out a release date for the next PlayStation console and they've landed on November 15, 2020 as the release date.
Is it really going to be three full years before the official PlayStation 5 release? PlayStation Universe quotes Pachter's stance on the PS5 release. "I think Sony's probably going to wait and see what happens with the Scorpio", he said. "And if the Scorpio puts pressure on them and if it's really that much better, maybe they'll accelerate."
Interestingly enough, looking at PS5 PlayStation 5 chart, there's a bit of a pattern regarding the releases of the different PS consoles. With 5, 6 and then 7 years being the gap between PS1, PS2 and PS3 respectively, another seven to eight years would follow the pattern. Regardless, this is purely guesswork.
Pachter also thinks the release will have to tie in with 4k resolution, which fans probably won't be seeing as the norm for a few years. "I don't see 4K broadcast until 2020," Pachter adds. "And I think 4K broadcast is what's going to cause people to switch their TVs over. So, I think that's a good time to launch a new console."
Looking back at 2016, it's been a pretty busy year for Sony. They launched the PlayStation 4 Slim, the PlayStation 4 Pro and the PlayStation VR. Given this many gaming consoles in the span of a year or so, it would make sense for them to take a breather and let other companies take center stage for a while.
Nevertheless, whether they really are testing the waters via Microsoft's Project Scorpio or if they're taking time to recoup, the PlayStation 5 remains yet another highly anticipated console on gamers' wishlists.
