Securing your Android device is also securing the personal data it holds. Whether it is personal data or corporate data, to some extent screen lock and an app lock can be some of the simplest solutions to ensure only the unauthorized person won't be able to access it.
This tutorial will teach you how to use the basic Android option of setting up a screen lock on your device, and the method of locking certain applications.
Why Setting a Screen Lock on Android is Important
The first level of security on an Android phone is setting a screen lock. Depending on the type of locks that can be used, like the PINs, patterns, and passwords, the method applicable can be selected. Also, having a screen lock increases security and privacy since all your information is safe, in case your gadget is lost or stolen.
How to Turn On or Change a Screen Lock Option on Android
Learn how to use these simple directions to set up or alter a screen lock on an Android OS-based device. Some of the steps below are only for devices with Android 10 or higher.
- Open Settings. From your home screen, tap the Settings icon.
- Tap Security. Scroll down and tap Security. If you can't find this option, check your phone manufacturer's support site for help.
- Tap Screen Lock to select your preferred lock method.
- If you have previously set a lock, you'll be prompted to enter your current PIN, pattern, or password to proceed with changes.
- Choose from available lock options: PIN, pattern, or password. You can then follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
Screen Lock Options: Selecting the Best Security Option
Android devices offer several screen lock methods, each with varying levels of security.
1. No Lock (No Protection)
- None: Your device will remain unlocked, offering no protection but allowing quick access to your home screen.
- Swipe: Swipe your finger across the screen to unlock the device. While convenient, this option provides no security.
2. Standard Locks
- PIN: Key in a 4-digit and up PIN code. For better security, one should use a 6-digit pin and above.
- Pattern: Draw a pattern on a 3x3 grid with your finger. Though simple to use, patterns are more likely to be guessed than PINs.
- Password: Use a combination of letters and numbers. A strong password is the most secure.
Auto-Confirm Unlock: To Use or Not to Use?
Auto-Confirm Unlock is a feature that lets you bypass the "Enter" key when unlocking your device. To use this feature, you must set a 6-digit or longer PIN.
Important: While convenient, enabling Auto-Confirm may reduce your device's security, as it makes unlocking quicker and easier. You can enable or disable Auto-Confirm in your device's security settings under Settings > Security > Screen Lock.
How to Disable Your Screen Lock
If you want to no longer use a screen lock, you can disable it completely. However, this leaves your device unprotected, so it is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.
- Click the Settings icon on your home screen.
- Scroll down and select Security.
- Tap None under Screen Lock. If you have already set a lock, you will need to enter your current PIN, pattern, or password before disabling it.
How to Lock Individual Apps on Android Devices
In addition to locking your device itself, many Android phones now offer the option to lock specific apps for added privacy. You can use a password here, but some require third-party apps to push through.
For Google Pixel (Android 15 and Above)
- Go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Private Space.
- Tap Set Up and follow the instructions to create a new Google account (or use an existing one) for locking apps.
- You will have the option to use an existing passcode or create a new one.
- Once you have set up, you can swipe up to access the app drawer and select Private Space to install the apps you want to lock.
Other Android Devices
If you use a device from manufacturers like Xiaomi, OnePlus, or Samsung, you can also use built-in app lock features. These allow the locking of individual apps using a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint.
Xiaomi/Redmi:
- Tap Settings > Apps > App Lock and set up your preferred security method.
OnePlus:
- Tap Settings > Security & Privacy > App Lock and enable and configure your lock.
Samsung:
- Use Secure Folder under Biometrics and Security for locking apps and files.
Huawei/Honor:
- Open Settings > Security > App Lock, then enable and select the apps to lock.
Third-Party App Lock Options
If your Android device doesn't have a built-in app lock feature, or if you prefer more customization, third-party apps can help. Some trusted options include App Lock by InShot and Norton App Lock.
Steps for using App Lock by InShot:
- Download from the Google Play Store.
- Set up your preferred PIN or pattern.
- Identify the apps you want to lock and proceed
