For PS4 users looking to upgrade from the PS4 stock drive, a 1TB of storage might still not be enough. With that, the release of Seagate's Firecuda 2TB hybrid should be a breath of fresh air as a report from Eurogamer stated its increase in performance as well as storage space.
The most notable feature of this 2.5-inch laptop-sized drive is its on-board 8GB NAND. The result is with constant use, loading times for each game significantly decreases overtime as it uses a caching system that stores frequently-used packets of data for quick access later on.
As the video below shows, a test between a stock PS4 stock drive, a Samsung 2TB HDD, the Firecuda 2TB hybrid and an OCZ Trion 480TB SSD for the game "Battlefield 1" which has the longest loading time on PS4 stock drive.
For the initial load time of Firecuda for the game, it took a not so impressive 112.8 seconds of load time compared to OCZ Trion's 47.7 seconds. However, with the NAND in action, loading the game multiple times decreases its load time and after the fifth time, the loading time decreased to 50 seconds. Compare that to the PS4 stock drive and Samsung's 2TB HDD which have relatively same results no matter how many times the game was loaded with 109.6 and 114.8 seconds respectively.
The Firecuda was tested for three more different games and the results were the same, the more users' load the games, the quicker for the hybrid drive to load that almost matches SSD speeds.
The Seagate's latest hybrid drive costs around $130.
