Hewlett-Packard has recalled almost 100,000 units of laptop batteries due to overheating and fire concerns as the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a notice regarding the recall, according to a report by Mobipicker.
The recall involves lithium-ion batteries that have Panasonic cells used in HP laptops which is compatible with HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, HP ProBook and HP Pavilion notebooks that were sold between March 2013 and October 2016 worldwide. The batteries measure around eight to 10.5 inches long, two inches wide and one inch high with barcodes of 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6EBVA, 6DGAL, 6DEMH, 6DEMA and 6CZMB.
If you have one of these batteries, it is highly recommended that you go to the nearest service center to get your battery replacement as soon as possible. For the meantime, it is also recommended for users to remove such batteries and instead use an external power source.
According to cnet, Chairman of CPSC Elliot Kaye stated that the electronics companies should modernize and improve safety standards for lithium-ion batteries. Kaye also added that consumers should never have to worry about batteries catching fire that might put them and their families in danger.
CPSC stated on its notice that HP received one additional report of battery overheating and charring that caused around $1,000 in property damages.
This isn't the first time HP recalled its batteries as it previously recalled 41,000 batteries in June 2016 for the same problems. A spokesperson from HP stated that the issue affected less than one percent of its units that were sold during the said period.
