Released last July 6, Pokemon Go has become a worldwide sensation and one of the most downloaded and profitable mobile games in 2016. However, the hype for this game is dwindling more each day. But with its latest update, will the game successfully revive the interest of players now?
In its first three months of release, Pokemon Go made about $600 million in global revenue and is still getting about $120,000 a day in the United Kingdom. However, downloads rapidly dropped from 79 million in July to less than 10 million around November. The same goes for players as well, it rocketed down at 80% by mid-September, according to Slice Intelligence.
The new updates were released on Monday by Niantic, the game's developer, under license from Nintendo. The update includes new Pokemon characters --- together with Pichu and Togepi, who are originally seen in the second generation Pokemon Gold and Silver. Another part of the update is the release of limited edition Pikachus with Christmas hats, which players can capture until December 29.
More Pokemon will be added over the following months, same as what they did last month with Ditto, Niantic also mentioned. Sadly, there was no announcement yet regarding abilities such as trading characters and multiplayer battles --- which would be great additions for the game. The update will serve as a competition with Nintendo's release of Super Mario as well, which will be released on Thursday.
Millions may have stopped playing the game, but there are still millions left playing. One challenge for Niantic is to bring the players back in the mobile game; and if done correctly, it could suffice the needs of existing players and encourage more to join. Hopefully, these updates will help Niantic bring back the game where it truly belongs --- at the top.
