Leading handset makers including Samsung are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to come out with devices that could sweep tech enthusiasts off their feet. Lining with this, the South Korean tech titan has been bragging about facial recognition as a quick and easy method to unlock its recently debuted Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ smartphones, but is the technology really spared from flaws?
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ pack an array of jaw-dropping specs and features, one of the most popular of which is the handsets' facial recognition technology. This unique security feature lets users unlock their devices using just their face.
While the technology seems nothing short of awe-inspiring, a recently posted video footage by YouTuber iDeviceHelp (via @marcianophone) gave gadget freaks a brief glimpse of a vulnerability in the company's much lauded facial recognition technology, that unlocks the Galaxy S8 smartphone simply by looking at a picture of a user.
This implies the system fails to tell the difference between a real person's face and a photograph of the person. The video centers on how a user effortlessly unlocks the Galaxy S8 smartphone simply by first, clicking a picture of himself using another phone, and then putting it in front of the S8 device.
The YouTuber is completely taken aback by the sight of the phone unlocking with just the photograph of the user. He hopes the software revealed in the footage is just unfinished software. He believes this is just a demo Galaxy S8, and this is highly unlikely to happen following the release.
It's worth noting that the Galaxy S7 used iris scanner in order to offer added security to the device instead. However, following the Note 7 debacle, it's hardly surprising that Samsung has primarily been focusing on the safety of its next flagship smartphones. In line with this, the Korean tech firm even reduced the capacity of the battery used in the Galaxy S8 and readjusted its chemistry to ensure it lasts longer, CNet reported.
