Buyers Beware - a worthy code name for a sting operation being pushed by authorities against those who engage in illegal sex trade. Police are specially targeting those who victimize minors and recent arrest involve a top official from VR tech giant Oculus.
First things first and a stern reminder, an arrest doesn't mean that anybody suspected of illegal act is guilty. Further, presumption of innocence is paramount unless proven otherwise. No merit of the case will be discussed here, in adherence to sub judice rule. With these premises in mind let us pry what happened to Dov Katz, head of computer vision for Oculus VR.
NBC Network affiliate King 5 reported that Katz figured out in a sting operation by Tukwila Police in Washington. The top Oculus VR official was ensnared after allegedly getting involved in "commercial sex abuse of a minor." Official inquests traced last Dec. 21 after the sting operation.
The final wick for Katz arrest case is an exchange of SMS from a cellular phone traced from the respondent and a police officer who posed as a prostitute. A set of documents gathered by Geekwire alleged that the police-poser said at first that she is 19 years old. Then she retracted and told the Oculus VR exec that she is actually 15. Katz allegedly replied that he is okay with the setup.
Gong into the arrest proper, Katz reasoned with the apprehending officer that he continued the conversation although knowing that on the other end is a minor because he wants to save her. The Oculus VR official then said that he is about to rescue what he thought a minor and call the police. However, investigators told Katz that it should have been the other way around - call the police first then rescue a victim.
At any rate, Oculus VR remains silent about the incident and attempts to request for comments proved futile. MobileNApp will update this report as necessary.
