According to the Year in Review 2016 of SuperData Research on Digital Games and Interactive Media, Blizzard's Overwatch emerged as the top PC game of the year.

Overwatch is a team-based, multiplayer first-person shooter video game. It is developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment and was officially released in May 2016 --- playable in Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It became more popular as it reached an immense player base in just a short period of time ---thanks to the game features, which include all of the teamwork necessities and strategies that were present in previous Blizzard games such as Starcraft, World of Warcraft, and Diablo.

SuperData's report shows that premium PC games made $5.4 billion overall this year, 10% of that is from Overwatch's revenue. The rest of the games were not released in 2016 and that likely helped Overwatch to be placed on top of the list. Simultaneously, Overwatch's revenue is more remarkable since it was only available for purchase from the end of May.

PC gaming was the second strongest market, grossing a total of $35.8 billion between January and November. It grew for about 6.7 percent year-on-year. This includes free-to-play, social, subscription, and premium PC games. Overwatch, along with League of Legends, seized the premium and free-to-play markets respectively --- thanks to the new generation of graphics card being released this year.

According to MCV, consumers spent $6.6 billion on consoles. From last year's spent revenue, it has been up to 14.8 percent. However, more games are being downloaded directly onto each machine instead of being bought physically. Overwatch sales were the biggest contributor here, culminating at $585.6 million. The second was Counter Strike: GO with $257.2 million. Europe spent $2.6 billion, but North America spent the most on premium console games this year at $2.9 billion, which is not that far behind.
