Tech enthusiasts who have been waiting with bated breath for a new Surface Book announcement are in for a huge disappointment.

Contrary to rumors that have been running rampant online, Microsoft is not likely to take the wraps off the long-rumored Surface Phone, a new Surface Pro or even a Surface Book during its spring event that takes place next month. But this shred of information might not really dash hopes of zealous gadget freaks with multiple sources indicating that the Surface Book 2 might just be a run-of-the-mill notebook.

Apple debuted the Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4 simultaneously more than a year ago, which is already quite old in the high turnover era of gadgets today. The Redmond-based tech giant got hopes of tech enthusiasts for an impending launch of new tablets high when it launched the Surface Studio late last year, instead; but much to their dismay, this may not come to fruition.

Details about bout the Surface Book 2 and the Surface Pro 5 have been hard to come by, with some sources suggesting the Surface Book 2 is not ready to make an appearance this spring. But, Microsoft is reportedly on the verge of unveiling a slew of devices that will showcase the Windows 10 Creators Update. With the creator-oriented Surface Studio unlikely to even see the light of day, it will be quite interesting to see what else could it be?

If new Surface-branded clamshell laptops are indeed in the offing this spring, Microsoft might trot them out as "Cloud Books" or something in that class in order to take on Chromebooks. Alternatively, Microsoft might market them as some sort of gaming-first devices, something along the lines of cloud first" and "mobile first," according to ZDNet.

Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to roll out its locked down Windows 10 Cloud Edition, which is deemed by many as the company's answer to Google's Chrome OS. Windows 10 Cloud focuses more on curbing access to what can be installed on devices. It's worth noting that only those apps that are in the Windows Store can be installed; however, desktop" UWP apps are also possible.

If this proves to be true, the purported clamshell-type computing device expected to be the Surface Book 2 might be the aforesaid Windows 10 Cloud devices. The popular software maker could also be repurposing the Surface Book moniker for that class of devices.

Regardless, those who have restlessly been waiting to get their hands on some new Windows 10 tablet in April this year might not have anything to cheer about.
