Avid gamers who have been clamoring for the long-rumored remake of "Final Fantasy VII" are in for a big disappointment, if a recent report from Famitsu is anything to go by.

The "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" was unveiled back in E3 2015 with much fanfare; however, fans of the lauded franchise may be in for a really long wait if what Director Tetsuya Nomura divulged during an interview with Famitsu (via Khinsider) is correct.

Apparently, "Final Fantasy VII Remake" has yet to commence production. Square Enix, according to multiple sources, is still on one of the initial stages of assembling target footage. In other words, the studio is still unsure about the benchmark they want the "FFVII" remake at.

The hype around "Final Fantasy VII Remake" began doing rounds online well before the E3 2015 trailer was even unveiled. Although, "Final Fantasy XII" is slated to receive a current-gen remake as well, "Final Fantasy" loyalists have been more excited about the remake of "FFVII". But much to their dismay, the title might not see the light of day for several more years despite multiple reports hinting at its impending launch.

In case that "Final Fantasy VII Remake" release date is pushed back until the arrival of the next generation of consoles due to the graphics targets that Square Enix wants, this could end up as another version of the "Final Fantasy XV," which finally arrived in Nov. 2016 after been announced 10 years before.

While "Final Fantasy XII Remake" is scheduled to arrive in July 2017, there's currently no word regarding exactly when the remake of "FFVII" might hit the store shelves. The game's delayed release can be attributed to its prolonged and troubled development as well as a stint with two radically different directors.

Furthermore, there were a couple of Olympics games, football World Cups at the time, but much to the relief of Square Enix that's finally over, "Final Fantasy" Brand Manager Shinji Hashimoto told IndiaTodayTech.

Trying to explain why it took the studio nearly 10 years to launch the much-awaited RPG, Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda said a lot of things happened backstage on the "FFXV" project but on the brighter side, the game turned out exactly what they wanted it to be and it is doing very well for the game publisher and developer.

As far as "Final Fantasy VII Remake" release date is concerned, Hashimoto San confirmed that it might not take as long as 10 years in development. However, "Final Fantasy" enthusiasts should not expect it to arrive anytime soon.
