Fans fell in love with "Supergirl," The CW's lighter superhero show about the titular character that debuted in 2015. However, recent episodes have also endeared Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Kara's/Supergirl's (portrayed by Melissa Benoist) sister, to viewers after the former has come out in the second season of "Supergirl."

In an interview with TV Insider, Leigh revealed that she is glad to know that majority of the viewers have accepted this new side of the character she portrays. The actress said, "It has been such a wild ride and there has been an overwhelming amount of positive responses." She added, "I've gotten thousands of messages and pictures from people telling me their stories. If this isn't an amazing opportunity to speak to the heart of humanity as a whole and also touch people individually, I don't know what is."

Leigh also shared a fan encounter that left her crying when a woman named Mary told her a personal story about coming out. The actress acknowledged that interacting with adults who come out late in life are a rare occurrence, and she also shared how "Supergirl's" executive producer Greg Berlanti talked about something similar.

Berlanti once heard about a woman who, at 77, realizes that she is a lesbian. Much like Alex's case, the woman was not lying to herself. It just so happens that she has "never gotten to that place of truly understanding herself."

Leigh also talked about her similarities with Alex, saying that even though she's 34 years old, she's "still figuring life out." She believes that Alex coming out is "something that really brings a lot of hope to people" because it is proof that "you don't have to have it all figured out." The actress added that it is important to be true to yourself "because if you can't do that, you won't be able to be honest with the people around you."

Meanwhile, a previous article from "The Hollywood Reporter" talked about Alex struggling with dating, which eventually led to the character confessing about her sexuality. It turns out she was not making progress when seeing other single men because she knows deep in her heart that the only way she can be in a healthy relationship is if her partner was also a woman.

"Supergirl" airs every Monday at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
