According to Game Rant, a division has been established around "The Last of Us Part 2" that talks about whether or not the lead character Joel is to be brought back or if his journey has ended. While one group thinks that he may well be alive due to what was seen in the trailer, there are those that do not think so.

A Redditor by the name of nerveonya shared a thought based on what the trailer implies, starting with Ellie being the main focus of the game. The speculation that Joel is dead has emerged, starting with the lines he mentioned. "You really gonna go through with this," as Joel asked Ellie, does not signify him joining her in whatever she plans, as he could have said "we" instead. Another factor to consider is how his entrance showed himself being a dark silhouette surrounded by light, implying that it could be just an illusion of Ellie.

On the other hand, some theorists suggest that Naughty Dog will not push through with this, as it would be a cliché and rather predictable move. Another presumed key point is how Joel lied to Ellie in the past game, saying she was not necessary in the saving of mankind, which is expected to continue in the sequel.

Furthermore, fans see the potential of Ellie being as angry as she was in the trailer because the Fireflies killed Joel. This is despite the possibility that he may have survived. Majority of the details surrounding "The Last of Us Part 2" show how Ellie is the point of the game, although Joel's participation is still paramount.
