"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will be hitting big screens soon and director James Gunn just revealed a key detail about how the film was made. Apparently, "Mass Effect," among others, played a huge role in inspiring him to make the sci-fi space adventure.
"Besides the comics, 'Mass Effect' (along with 'Flash Gordon,' 'Farscape,' 'Star Wars,' and some others) were my biggest inspirations," Gunn wrote on his Twitter account.
In a separate post, he also shared his take on why game-to-movie adaptations oftentimes do not succeed. "Most of them have failed because they are bad," he wrote. He added that the movies in question "hit the screens to late," after the hype about the game has long gone. "Others are better left as games," Gunn continued.
According to VG24/7, Gunn's clear knowledge about filmmaking and video games makes him a suitable candidate for this particular genre. It would appear that the director has the chops to mold a movie from its video game origin.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is the second instalment in this particular Marvel franchise. The film will reportedly pick up where the first one left off - which involves Star-Lord's father. It was revealed in the first movie that Star-Lord, portrayed by Chris Pratt, is the son of the Living Planet Ego, played by Kurt Russell.
Gunn revealed that the father-son relationship between the two will be rooted in more grounded emotions. "It runs the gamut of emotions for him," he told USA Today. Star-Lord will be confused with what he feels toward his biological father - especially after they have not seen each other for such a long time.
He will want to "understand why his father was not around" but will quickly idolize him, anyway. As the film goes on, Star-Lord will begin to weigh the kind of relationship that he has with his newly found father and comparing it to his relationship with the man who raised him, Yondu - played by Michael Rooker.
