"Riverdale" Season 1 is set to launch later in January 2017 on The CW. Meanwhile, the network featured some character portraits for the upcoming Archie Comics-based TV series from Berlanti Productions.
ComicBook revealed that the "Riverdale" character portraits showed KJ Apa starring as Archie Andrews, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. The "Riverdale" images also showed Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, MadchenAmick as Alice Cooper, Luke Perry as Fred Andrews, Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge, and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller.
TVLine stated that "Riverdale" revamped the popular comics set in the 1950s, although the archetypes are still the same. The upcoming series showcase the Archie, the All-American boy, Betty, the girl next door, Veronica, the rich brat, and Jughead, the carefree slacker, among others. "Riverdale" is expected to be fresh and darker than the comics.
In "Riverdale," Archie is a football player who is transforming into a hunk, with dreams of becoming a musician. Betty is Archie's best friend, although she always wanted to take their relationship to a romantic one. Veronica is a new classmate that starts a love triangle. Fans of the original comics may be surprised by edgy twists in the plot, such as Archie having a summer fling with his music teacher Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel), and the mysterious death of Jason Blossom, the golden boy in Riverdale High.
More characters from the comics are expected to appear later in the season, such as Reggie Mantle (Ross Butler), Moose Mason (Cody Kearsley) and Dilton Doiley (Daniel Yang). The "Riverdale" cast also features more diversity, with the addition of Kevin, Betty's gay best friend and other interesting characters. The "Riverdale" version of Jughead will be a sarcastic recluse, initially estranged from his best friend Archie, although his role is expected to change as the mysteries unravel.
Roberto Aguiree-Sacasa will serve as the showrunner of "Riverdale." He is also co-creator of the new series with Greg Berlanti. Roberto is also the Chief Creative Officer of Archie Entertainment and the writer of "Afterlife With Archie." "Riverdale" will debut on Jan. 26, 2017 on The CW. More updates and details are expected soon.
