A couple of years ago, David Esparza Guerrero, an X-wing enthusiast and hobbyist developer, posted a message on GOG forums proposing a redesign of the X-Wing flight simulator that uses the original game resources and enables it to be played at modern resolutions with modern controllers.
The XWVM project may seem like a fantasy that is discussed actively by people then dies down after a few weeks. However, David Esparza Guerrero was not messing around. A couple of weeks ago, he posted a 14-minute prototype gameplay on YouTube and it looks really good.
A recreation of the Y-Wing Historical Mission 6: Interception and Capture, is not as intense compared to the battle in "House of the Dying Sin". But the XWVM project is another kind of space simulator, also from another era. Missions are loaded with many goals and challenges amidst the vastness of space. Combat scenes can be intense in just a second, especially the one involving capital ships and being in a 1v1 fight that may seem endless does not mean it is over.
The discussion on GOG also has interesting perceptions about the behaviour of the game, which the creator spent a lot of time doing. Back in November, he discussed in a post why AI controlled TIE bombers do not play like humans would, the enemy is deliberately set with limitations on strategy and behaviour, otherwise, no player can stand the chance to be on top.
Hopefully, all ends well with the game, the very fine line between recreating an old game to actually making a new one is very thin, and it could be the make or break of it.
