"Star Citizen" and "Squadron 42" will be running on the new Amazon Lumberyard. Cloud Imperium Games and Amazon was revealed to have been working together in the past several months to transfer the games to the new and more powerful engine.

Kotaku reported that the game developer has allegedly been working with Amazon in the past year to have the latest patch 2.6 of "Star Citizen" launch on the new engine. According to David Swofford, CIG director of communications, CIG is a regular licensee of Amazon's technology. The switch happened with the release of "Star Citizen" patch 2.6. Swofford also said that all the work that CIG did to expand the CryEngine was transferred to the new engine.

CIG CEO and creative director Chris Roberts stated in a press release that CIG has been collaborating with Amazon for over a year, since they have been searching for a technology leader to be partners with for the long term future of "Star Citizen" and "Squadron 42." Lumberyard offers groundbreaking technology features for online games, plus deep back-end cloud integration on AWS and its social component with Twitch that lets them conveniently and quickly link to millions of gamers around the world.

Both CIG and Amazon's Lumberyard share the same technical vision, and it has been a smooth and easy shift. Roberts officially announced that the 2.6 Alpha release for "Star Citizen" is running on AWS and Lumberyard. CIG initially licensed the CryEngine of Crytek to create "Star Citizen" in, although they needed to make significant changes to the engine to build the two previously mentioned games. Amazon Lumberyard is also an off-shoot of CryEngine, but more extensive and refactored for "Star Citizen."

Dan Winters, Amazon's head of business development for Amazon Games, "Star Citizen" and "Squadron 42" are very ambitious projects that can only be made with excellent engine technology coupled with the transformative power of the cloud. They are excited to bring and see their games running on the new engine to showcase the performance and scalability that they originally envisioned. More updates and details on "Star Citizen" are expected soon.
