The Wii U version of upcoming platformer "Yooka-Laylee" has now been cancelled, according to an announcement made by Playtonic Games.
The developer has said on its official website that they will no longer release "Yooka-Laylee" on the Wii U, and will be making the jump to Nintendo's upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch.
"The Playtonic team is sad to confirm that despite our best efforts and exploring every possible avenue, we've encountered unforeseen technical issues that unfortunately mean it will be impossible for us to release the game on Wii U as initially planned," the developers said.
"We can however confirm the exciting news that we are now working very closely with Nintendo to look to bring 'Yooka-Laylee' to the upcoming Nintendo Switch," Playtonic confirmed. "We're looking forward to exploring the opportunity and will have more details to share early next year."
Kickstarter backers who will be afffected by the change will be able to move their pledges to other available platforms, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac or Linux, for free. These versions will be released on Apr. 11, 2017.
Backers also have the choice to wait for the Switch version, and more details, as well as its release date, presumably, will be revealed in 2017.
It looks like more developers, not just Playtonic, are snubbing the console in facor of Nintendo's newest system. Earlier this month, one man indie developer Concerned Ape announced that its popular farming simulation game "Stardew Valley" will no longer be developed for the Wii U, and will also be making the jump to Switch.
"Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch," Concerned Ape's Eric Barone said. "I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch's unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for 'Stardew Valley'."
"Yooka-Laylee" will be released on Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and Linux on Apr. 11.
