"The Last Guardian," Team ICO's latest game for the PlayStation 4, shares a similar style, theme and certain gameplay elements with two of the company's previous titles. "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus" were both initially released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001 and 2005, respectively, and both were then remastered for the PlayStation 3.
Back in June 2016, VG24/7 had the chance to try the playable demo for "The Last Guardian" at Sony's E3 2016 event. The demo lasted 40 minutes, and the experience was definitely a memorable one.
The gaming website revealed that while the demo "looked old," those who tried it noticed that the "textures seemed flat." The single-player experience was somehow marred by "lighting and particle effects" that were too dated for the current technologies available in gaming.
However, those who have waited patiently for this title will be more than happy to overlook it's dated graphics since the demo was still breathtaking. Players start the demo as the unnamed boy who finds an injured and chained creature named Trico. You are then tasked with freeing the creature and escaping the room.
VG24/7 reported several control issues with the demo which could prove troublesome if they are not addressed when it comes to the actual release of the game. Still, the demo for "The Last Guardian" garnered praise from the online publication as it was noted that Trico was painstakingly brought to life.
Meanwhile, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has also released a review for the full game. According to the article, "The Last Guardian" was reviewed on two consoles: Sony's PS4 and the PS4 Pro.
Digital Foundry revealed that PS4 owners will enjoy a native 1920x1080 resolution on the console. Still, sharp-eyed gamers will notice evidence that the game was initially developed as a PS3 title, especially when it comes to slight issues with "geometry and textures" in the game.
On the other hand, PS4 Pro users have the advantage of image quality enhancements on the updated console. With the Pro, players can have a 3360x1890 resolution while playing "The Last Guardian."
Still, while playing it on the Pro gives a slight visual upgrade compared to the PS4, "The Last Guardian" is definitely a title that was worth the wait with its beautiful visuals and one-of-a-kind gameplay. Team ICO's "The Last Guardian" is now available on the PS4.
