The much-awaited video game "The Last Guardian" has received positive nods from critics, despite its below average performance on PS4.

"The Last Guardian" Performs Poorly On Standard PS4

Despite being in development for almost a decade, the game is said to perform poorly on standard PS4 units, according to a tech analysis presented by Eurogamer's Digital Foundry.

"From a performance perspective, the bottom line is this. The only option available to PlayStation gamers in getting a regularly smooth 30fps is to use PlayStation 4 Pro, running at 1080p," Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan said. "If you're on a regular PS4 you're in for a very variable experience; lurching between 20-30fps just by running around empty areas, and with stutters to over 110ms."

Playstation Universe also experienced the same dip in framerate while playing the game, making it frustratingly impossible to continue playing at times. As this video shows, the game tends to drop to under 10fps, unacceptable even for a standard PS4.

"The Last Guardian" Reviews

Despite the laggy performance on PS4 at times, "The Last Guardian" has proven to meet all expectations storywise. Playstation Lifestyle gave it a perfect score of 100 on review score aggregator Metacritic. The site, like other publications, have praised the beautiful relationship between the main character and Trico, which is easily makes it the highlight of the game.

"Relationships and how they fit within a game's world can be a major driver in a narrative and the player experience," Playstation Lifestyle's Anthony Severino said in his review. "In 'The Last Guardian', there's rarely a word spoken to give clarity to what the boy and the beast are thinking, yet they have the most believable and understood relationship in a video game ever."

Destructoid's Chris Carter said that this was not Fumito Ueda's best game, but wants the director to continue making games like this in the future. There were noticeable issues which makes "The Last Guardian" an imperfect game, such as the dated graphics and the hard to control camera, but this will be worth people's time and money.

"The Last Guardian" is out now for the Playstation 4.
