"The Last Guardian" took a long time before it got released. Fortunately for fans, the latest version has already arrived in PlayStation 4 early December and most of those who waited felt that it was all worth it.
Fumito Ueda, director of the said game, sat down just recently with Glixel staff to talk about the development procedures for the game. Here are some of the things that many players would like to know about - from the details of how the game moved along and how in spite of the years it took for it to be released to the shift from PS 3 to PS4.
"The Last Guardian" Inspirations. In the booklet, a set of plastic toys - horse, tiger and eagle were seen, animals which when combined composes Trico. Used primarily as visual reference for storyboarding, these are the reasons why animal movements are as accurate as they are.
The development of Trico does not surround fantasy characters that you can always see in various games or films. But instead, animals are used to capture any creatures moves and tendencies. In the discussion, it can be seen that much effort is put into Trico's movements, using procedural animation to key-frame animation as drawn by the animators. Some programming is done to combine such movements.
The secret to Trico's eyes it that it shows empathy resembling the runny eyes of a dog. The mystery behind this may make you think that Trico looks way too poignant, is this a strategy so that the player invests more emotions to the game?
It was revealed in "The Last Guardian" review that this is one of the key highlights of the project. Limitations on the hardware and software impacted the design of the eyes of the colossuses of Shadow. However, there is an intention to sustain the genuine emotions from the eyes of Trico upon the start of development on PS3.
The director also believes that there is more to express in the eyes without motion. Such characteristic is employed in Trico's case, as if he was "feeling through the eyes." That is the main goal in drawing the character into the game. Trico's behavior frustrated some players pointing on the intensity of obedience he can conduct throughout the entire game.
Sometimes, the creature seems finicky and unresponsive. Finally, it was disclosed that the barometer for Trico's emotions are: trust and hunger. This, though important, does not affect a player's leveling up in the game. For those who have no clue about "The Last Guardian" yet, here is a trailer:
