Sony has kicked off its press conference at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo with a bang with a new gameplay trailer of "God of War."

Accompanied by the amazing live orchestra in the background led by composer Bear McCreary, Sony opens its annual yearly conference with a sneak peek into its new "God of War" game which is currently in development.

The trailer begins with a fully bearded Kratos talking to his son. He wants him to learn how to hunt, and shows him the ropes. The duo confronts some beasts, showing the new combat scheme mixed with a bit of signature "God of War" gore.

At the end of the trailer, after defeating a fearsome beast and killing a deer, Kratos tells his son that he is ready. "For what?" his son asked. Kratos answered, "For the beginning", signifying that there is a more serious battle ahead.

The new "God of War" gameplay is a departure from the hack and slash formula of the previous games, with touches of RPG elements like levelling up skills and weapon proficiencies, among others, according to Gamespot.

After the conference, game developer Sony Santa Monica Studios took to the Playstation Blog to explain the development of "God of War".

Sony Santa Monica's Cory Barlog confirmed that the team had to make changes to the original "God of War" without simply rebooting the franchise. Kratos is a character that has made bad decisions in his life, resulting in the death of his family and his "rage fueled descent into madness and vengeance".

What if Kratos chose a different path? The story, according to SMS, is not a reboot, but a retelling of Kratos story.

On deciding to include Kratos' son in the game, Barlog said, "The weight of that responsibility drives the instinct to protect, to want to prevent the mistakes of our past being delivered upon them."

Fans hope to see more of "God of War" in the next few months, including a release date announcement.
