Voice assistants are going to benefit from generative AI this year: an unprecedented step is to integrate generative AI into Bixby, which is Samsung's voice assistant. This news, corroborated by TM Roh, Samsung's Head of Mobile Business, speaks of an intentional drive to enhance Bixby's capabilities as well as its calibration with newsmaking Ai voice assistants in rival corporations like Google.
In an interview, Roh emphasized that these advancements will be a driving force for consumer interest, aiming to bring more convenience and benefits to users.
"As consumers use more AI capabilities, they can actually feel the convenience and benefits they bring," Roh stated. "I believe strongly that these Galaxy AI and mobile AI are strong motivations and drivers for the purchase of new products."
Redefining Bixby's Role
Initially, Samsung did not introduce substantial new AI features to Bixby during its Galaxy AI launch, unlike other companies that revamped their voice assistants with cutting-edge AI technologies. Instead, Samsung only reassured users that Bixby would not be shut down, without detailing any concrete future plans.
However, this approach is now changing. Samsung's large language model (LLM) is set to be applied in the next update of Bixby and this will make it able to handle more complex and contextual tasks. The rationale for this update is to 'reimagine' Bixby although it's not clear what that signifies at the moment.
Roh confirmed, "We're going to advance Bixby with the application of Gen AI technology."
This development follows earlier reports this year and aligns with the broader trend of integrating generative AI into consumer technology.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Devices
Samsung has tied with Google that shows Samsung's strong cord to facilitate AI. At the latest Unpacked event, Google's Senior Vice President, Rick Osterloh, came to the stage to talk about the existing collaboration towards changing the mobile experience with AI. This collaboration demonstrates Samsung's approach of not only developing its own AI systems but also including other relevant technologies from the industrial peers.
The above generative AI features should be present in the subsequent Galaxy devices, the Flip 6 and the Fold 6. specifying that those next generation foldable phones are "perfect devices for innovation", the given author Osterloh hinted at the opportunities of presenting Samsung's AI progress in these models.
Looking Ahead
As Samsung prepares to launch these significant upgrades, it maintains its strategy of offering multiple AI assistant options on its devices. The idea assures that although Bixby will receive a significant improvement, the various users will remain with other AI services that they can use depending on what they need at any given time.
Samsung's AI strategy highlighted in plans to introduce generative AI for Bixby is a significant development in the AI path of the electronics giant. Thus, with the help of the improved AI technology Samsung is to improve the users' satisfaction, increase consumers' demand, and strengthen its positions on the market of voice assistants. This also seems to shift the position of Bixby and is in line with Samsung's plan to incorporate new-age AI features across its entire range of devices.
