Samsung's long-awaited Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ smartphones are finally set to hit the store shelves in India. Ahead of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+'s looming arrival, Samsung India has already started sending out invites for the launch.
Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ Launch In India
Samsung India confirmed the two smartphones will be announced in the country on Wednesday, April 19 at a launch event that kicks off 2 pm IST. For now, Samsung has kept details about the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+'s price in India under wraps. Meanwhile, let's take a gander at the upcoming smartphones' specs and features.
Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ Specifications & Features
Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ were both announced late last month at an event held in New York City. The devices sport 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch display and come with Samsung's Exynos 8895 processor. The handsets pack 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage along with an iris scanner, fingerprint sensor, and facial recognition. They run on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
While model availability is likely to vary based on locations, a blog post on Samsung India's official website suggests some of the aforesaid features might not be available in the country. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ pave the way for a new level as far as functionality and convenience are concerned, thanks to the advent of multiple services and apps and the gorgeous Infinity Display that offers deeply engaging viewing experiences.
Also, based on the region, the devices will be up for grabs in two SoC options i.e. Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Samsung Exynos 8895. While the Qualcomm SoC variant will exclusively be available in some selected regions, the Samsung SoC variant will be up for grabs in most other regions such as India.
This should not be much of a deal-breaker for potential buyers as both the two SoCs were spotted on AnTuTu and GeekBench 4 benchmark by PlayfulDroid (via Gadgets 360) showing comparable performance. It's worth noting, though, that the Samsung Exynos 8895 SoC outperformed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC in a few benchmarks.
There aren't too many striking differences between the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ smartphones except for the dimensions, battery capacity and display size of what the South Korean handset maker dubs as the Infinity Display. The newfangled display comprises 18:5:9 aspect ratio, minimal bezels (top and bottom), and dual-edge curved display. The UHD Alliance has certified the displays as Mobile HDR Premium.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 sports a 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED display with 1440x2960 pixels resolutions, while the Galaxy S8+ comes with a 6.2-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with 1440x2960 pixels resolution. Both handsets use Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
On the photography front, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones boast 12MP 'Dual Pixel' main cameras equipped with f/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. The smartphones sport an 8MP front shooter with f/1.7 aperture and autofocus on board.
In terms of connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ offer a bunch of options including GPS, NFC, USB Type-C, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz, 5GHz), and 4G LTE (Cat. 16). Sensors on the board come with the magnetometer, proximity sensor, heart rate sensor, gyroscope, barometer, ambient light sensor, and an accelerometer. Both devices support NFC and MST connectivity, and Samsung Pay.
The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ support fast charging as well as wireless charging. The S8 and the S8+ smartphones are backed by 3000mAh and 3500mAh batteries respectively. The Galaxy S8's dimensions are 148.9x68.1x8mm and the device weighs in at 155 grams. The larger variant i.e. the S8+, on the other hand, measures 159.5x73.4x8.1mm and weighs in at 173 grams.
It's unclear whether or not Samsung will start handing out the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones to customers starting April 19 or if Samsung plans to make them wait until April 21, or April 28. According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S8, and the S8+ will be available in a slew of color options including Coral Blue, Maple Gold, and Midnight Black. Although there's no word regarding the devices' price, they are likely to start at INR 59,990 (about $930) for Galaxy S8.
