Samsung's Galaxy S8 currently holds the mantle of world's best smartphone to date. The company's phone model set trends in a market that has seen little innovation in the past few years.
True to their word, the Korean company again managed to break smartphone standards. Reportedly, Samsung is at it again with its foldable smartphone called the Galaxy X.
Up until now, there hasn't been anything official from the Korean tech giant. The only thing that's feeding the consumer market is wild rumors about the upcoming phone.
After the Galaxy S8's successful outing, Samsung is looking forward to setting a new trend. In the short history of smartphones, the Galaxy X is reportedly the first phone to have a foldable body.
The first information of Samsung's revolutionary device came from "Project Valley." At the time, smartphone tipsters attributed the project codename to the Galaxy X device.
Several patent leaks and rendered images have shown a normal smartphone. But the biggest draw from the device is that it opens up like a book to reveal a larger, tablet-sized display.
Samsung loyalists have long speculated that the device could be out this year. However, according to Express, Samsung's lead engineer has already shot down the possibility.
Kim Tae-woong, principal engineer at Samsung Display expects foldable tech to mature in 2019. He also said that "bezel-free display still sells well to consumers."
Before anything else, engineers must first overcome major technical challenges in production. It's most likely that single-sided foldable screens will appear first. Double-sided foldable devices might come later when Samsung masters the technology.
Aside from Samsung, rival companies have also shown their interest in the foldable tech. Google has reportedly signed a deal with LG Display to deliver foldable smartphone display panels.
LG is working on a prototype that has a significantly high technical level. Reports have surfaced that the new design could soon make its appearance worldwide.
Apple and Microsoft have also expressed their interest in the foldable panels. Recently, smartphone tipsters have discovered that Microsoft has submitted patents containing flexible displays.
