Google hasn't really shied away from providing big screen smartphones, as evident with its massive offerings in the past. Now that the company has finally started to release its self-branded devices, new reports are suggesting that Google may be poised to release yet another massive Google Pixel smartphone that could be similar in size to the Nexus 6 or the Nexus 6P.
According to a report from Forbes, the latest leaks regarding the codenames for Google's upcoming flagship offerings may be an indication of a massive new Google Pixel variant. The company is expected to release three new variants this time, namely the Google Pixel 2, the Google Pixel 2 XL, and a third unknown variant.
Earlier in the week, several leaks had surfaced online, which had revealed that the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL is being developed under the codenames, "Walleye" and "Muskie," respectively. According to Droid Life, several sources had informed them that a third smartphone that is being developed is referred to as "Taimen."
Google does like to give its different smartphones codenames based on actual fish names. Interestingly, the type of fish that a smartphone is named after does give some hints regarding its size and how it is going to be positioned. As an example, the previous Nexus smartphones were named after fishes based on their sizes, with the Nexus 4 named "Mako" and the large Nexus 6 getting the "Shamu" codename.
This is also the case with the current generation Pixel smartphones, with the 5.1-inch Pixel getting the "Sailfish" codename, while the larger Pixel XL got the "Marlin" codename. Following this trend, a Muskie fish is significantly larger than a Walleye, but a Taimen, which could weigh as much as 220 pounds, is the biggest fish of them all.
The codename for the third unknown device strongly hints that it may be larger than the original Pixel XL, perhaps even bordering on tablet territory. As of the moment, there is still no evidence to support this claim, but based on the company's historical behavior, a massive Google Pixel XXL may be a big possibility.
