Nintendo has now officially revealed that it will soon be launching a new membership service that will be giving players access to games online for a minimal monthly fee. The new subscription service will likely be similar to Sony's PlayStation Plus service and Microsoft's Xbox Games with Gold program, in that members will be able to access a certain number of video game titles online each month.
The notification for Nintendo's new membership service was revealed in the Nintendo Switch's day one update, which included information regarding what the service will be all about. According to Pocket Lint, the service itself will have a flat rate, but pricing has yet to be formally announced. However, the prices should be around the same amount as the subscription fees for Microsoft and Sony's online services.
The Nintendo Switch service will also apparently include a different "classic" title each month that will have an online multiplayer mode. Members will also reportedly be able to plan and hold gaming sessions with other members, while also being able to utilize voice chat while gaming. A dedicated app is also coming out to different smartphones, which will likely be used as a hub to get notifications about promos and upcoming gaming sessions.
As an added bonus, paying members will be getting a discount on select Nintendo Switch digital downloads and purchases. The new Nintendo Switch online subscription service is revealed to be launched sometime in Autumn. In the meantime, Nintendo Switch owners will be able to use the online service for free until it is launched. This means that players will be getting free access to the service for at least six months before they have to pay a monthly fee.
The Nintendo Switch will be Nintendo's seventh major home console. The console will have over 100 titles available during launch from the company's own developers and third party sources. The Nintendo Switch console ships out today, March 3.
