Sega's move to bring classic Dreamcast titles back initially failed to deliver; notably, the port of Sonic Adventure lacked widescreen support and maintained the bugs of the original game. It received negative reception as a result, and Sega is now looking to win gamers back with Jet Set Radio HD.
Sega launched the Sega Heritage branding to cover the releases of Dreamcast "classics." It released Sonic Adventure Crazy Taxi and Afterburner; most agree that the latter did a good job of reflecting the classic arcade experience. It recently announced that Sonic Adventure 2 is to be released this October with a facelift, though the differences between the original and the HD release seemed minimal.
Jet Set Radio is a game about rollerblading across Tokyo, claiming ground from rival gangs with graffiti, and escaping the police. It saw a warm reception during its debut in 2000 due to popularizing the cell-shaded art style later seen in games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Its sequel, Jet Set Radio Future, arrived on the Xbox two years later.
PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive early access to the game on an unconfirmed date, according to the official PlayStation Plus blog. It will be available to these subscribers a week before Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation Vita players. PlayStation Plus members also get ten percent off the regular $9.99 price in the U.S.
The game features support for a total of nine trophies, and thirty achievements are supported for Xbox Live Arcade. Along with high-definition resolution, Sega restored almost the entirety of the original worldwide soundtrack, publishing the full tracklist.
Jet Set Radio HD will be released on Sept. 18 on PlayStation Network, Sept. 19 on Xbox Live Arcade and PC, and Oct. 16 on PlayStation Vita. An Android and iOS version is also planned for Q4 2012.
