On July 20, Sega announced that the HD version of Jet Set Radio, previously announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, is heading to iOS- and Android-based devices (registration required). The HD edition of the title continues the wave of high definition releases, aimed to appeal to nostalgia of older players while bringing the title to a new audience.

Seen as a Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio is based around skating on a rollerblade, performing tricks, and spreading graffiti. It sounds terrible in terms of gameplay, but doesn't Tony Hawk: Pro Skater as well without playing the game?

According to Sega, Jet Set Radio also has a fantastic soundtrack and 99 percent of it is returning in the title. Radio pioneered cel-shaded graphics, probably the reason why the title looks great in 2012. The art-style is featured in several of its games including The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

Specifically, the iOS version of the game will support the Retina display and OpenFeint (though no Game Center, confusingly), while presumably OpenFeint will also be supported on Android devices. The version uses a virtual keyboard and buttons, so it seems difficult for a fast-moving game where tactile feedback massively improves the experience. It'll be interesting to see if there's GamePad support for the Android version, with the virtual input methods being notoriously difficult to use for precise control.

Players can perform tricks, and grind, while grabbing collectibles. Chances are that there will be sections when jumping across structures requires quick movements; therefore, using viral input methods may increase the opportunity for errors, adding to the frustration.

The gameplay also makes it possible to use camera-enabled devices to create graffiti, probably from photos taken, and upload achievements to Facebook.

The franchise hasn't returned with an original release since the sequel - Jet Set Radio Future - to Jet Set Radio launched on the original Xbox. If the Jet Set Radio re-release sells well, then questions are raised if the digital-focused Sega will develop a third title. The company said it was focused on four key franchises, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Football Manager, but Jet Set Radio did not feature in the list.

Jet Set Radio was launched on the ill-fated Dreamcast, part of a suite of great titles for the platform. Moreover, Sega has restructured the company, reportedly, amidst poor earnings reports.

Jet Set Radio releases this summer. The announcement trailer is below:
