Will a Deron Williams Cleveland Cavaliers deal make the Cavs the favorite to win this year's Larry O'Brien trophy? Adding Deron Williams will solve the playmaking woes that the current Cavs' second unit have.
The Golden State Warriors is currently the favorite to win the 2017 NBA championship trophy. The signing of Kevin Durant during the offseason has propelled the Dubs to be the favorite to win the Larry O'Brien trophy this year. Though a Cleveland Cavaliers with a healthy LeBron James on its roster will always be in contention as a legit contender, the Cavs has been overly relying on their stars for production. This is particularly true in terms of playmaking.
The Cavs has relied on LeBron and Kyrie Irving to run their offense, but with the 82 games grind of the regular season, over relying on LeBron and Irving may not be a good idea for the Cavs. LeBron has voiced out his concern with the Cavaliers' lack of playmakers in the past.
Adding Deron Williams to the Cleveland Cavaliers roster will fill the playmaking void that the Cavs' second unit currently have. Deron may no longer be an All-Star caliber point guard but he can be the best backup point guard in the league.
Deron Williams can perfectly run a pick and roll offense. The former All-Star is currently averaging seven assists per game this season and was able to take the helm of a Mavericks team that has less talent compared to the Cavs' roster.
Williams, aside from being a legit passer, is still able to create his own shot and is also a descent shooter. Given such, Deron Williams can share the floor with Kyrie Irving in a lineup that will feature both point guards' driving ability and shooting skills. A Cleveland Cavaliers Deron Williams deal will certainly make the Cavs better in paper. However, fans will have to wait for Williams to play with the Cavs before jumping into conclusions.
