Hideo Kojima, the renowned Japanese video game designer, director, and producer, recently talked about why he agreed to make "Death Stranding" a PlayStation 4 console exclusive. Even though he received many offers, the game designer chose to collaborate with Sony for Kojima Productions' upcoming open-world action game.
At "a state event from RTX Sydney," Hideo Kojima shared why he ultimately chose to work with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the upcoming video game "Death Stranding," per Dual Shockers. Kojima first said that some of the offers he received for the title even came from "outside the gaming industry." An individual "from the Arab Emirates" even tried to offer Kojima "a lot of money" for the chance to be involved with "Death Stranding."
Since the upcoming game is "his first title as an independent developer," Kojima went with Sony because he knows working with the company will result in a game "that will make everyone happy." By choosing Sony, Kojima is sure to work with someone he "had mutual respect and a [good] relationship" with.
Kojima has collaborated with Sony for more than two decades so he is familiar with how they company works. By working with a frequent collaborator, the independent developer has made sure that will be little to no chance of "Death Stranding" becoming a failure.
As his production company's first game, Kojima wanted to have full creative freedom for "Death Stranding" and Sony has agreed to let him take the reins for the upcoming title. Sony will take care of the "large-scale promotional activities" for "Death Stranding," but Kojima will also help out with "devising the promotion." Kojima was also asked if "Death Stranding" is a VR game, and the developer replied that "at this time Death Stranding is not a VR game."
According to Keen Gamer, while other companies would have had second doubts about showing actor Norman Reedus in his birthday suit at the first "Death Stranding" trailer, Sony didn't have any problems with it, revealed Kojima. This "mutual trust between PlayStation and Kojima Productions" was crucial to the developer's decision.
