Gamers will have to pay more if they want the official Nintendo Switch 32GB HORI microSD cards. HORI carries the Nintendo Switch logo and was pegged as the official external storage mechanism for the console. However, it carries a $33 tag while comparably, a 32GB Sandisk SD card costs $23.
HORI 16 or 32GB SD cards sounds too small, but cartridges are not reliant on read-write amount similar to hard disks in other consoles. The next approach for Nintendo Switch is to pinpoint its official brand carrier. The brand suddenly resurged into the market and some unscrupulous sellers even listed HORI at twice the price.
Of course, players can still purchase cheaper SD cards with lesser read-write speed. Another way to go with Nintendo Switch is to get non-official SD cards with similar specs and cut the price by at least $10 compared to HORI, according to Nintendo Life.
Players should remember that the Nintendo Switch can handle any brand of microSD, according to Forbes. HORI is not a proprietary SD card, but only the officially approved SD card that is presumably "compatible" with the new console. Unlike Sony portables which works with a singular brand, Nintendo Switch is more flexible..
Furthermore, expanding the storage capacity with HORI microSD card or by any other brand is appealing, but not necessary. Nintendo Switch will still survive with its internal storage or game cartridge.
Nintendo Switch also offers expandable internal memory apart from the HORI option, but at a cost. Meaning, players have to shell out a lot in order to turn their units into a gaming device that offers twice the space.
