Star Wars 1313's debut at E3 2012 took people aback with its unprecedented level of graphical performance people. However, despite being a mature Star Wars title, violence will not be the game's shtick. "We had a lot of people saying: mature Star Wars? Does that mean we're going to see blood and guts all over the place. That's not it at all - that's not what we're shooting for. I don't think that would ever fit in Star Wars, really," Billiard said.
"When you can render characters that look like the ones in our game - and other games - you get to this realism level where you really don't want to encourage that kind of thing," he said, adding, "I feel that responsibility escalates with fidelity."
Billiard remarked on the level of violence at E3, probably referring to games like God of War: Ascension where the demo pulled an enemy's brain out. The audience clapped and cheered as it happened. "Seeing that kind of reaction from gamers... It may well be human nature, but you don't want to push content out there that pushes those buttons," Creative Director Rob Billiard said to Official Xbox Magazine UK.
God of War was not alone in its display of graphic violence. The end of Naughty Dog's Last of Us demo features Joel, the protagonist, shooting an enemy in the head with a shotgun while Lara Craft in the Tomb Raider reboot gets cut and bruised while shooting enemies at point-blank range. Amid the gore, 1313 stands out.
1313 moves away from the focus on Jedis and lightsabers, instead featuring a bounty hunter as its protagonist. This is seen as a refreshing change for a franchise that has often neglected to explore huge areas of its vast lore. The demo focuses on bounty hunters escaping from a crashing spaceship, climbing over structures Uncharted-style. Sections of fans said the actions looks semi-scripted, along with cover-based third-person shooting.
