The South Korean military has a program of co-developing fighter planes. To boost the Kai KF-X fighter jet project, they launched footage that was discovered recently to be clips from video games.
In 2015, after 14 years of work, South Korea beaming with pride showcased the footage of its cutting-edge Kai KF-X fighter jet. In December 2016, Korea Times discovered that the footage used in the publicity campaign of the department to show off their project was actually from video games. The production cost of the Kai KF-X fighter jet promotional video was estimated to be around 40 million won or approximately $40,000.
The video clips were taken from the video games "Ace Combat: Assault Horizon" by Japan Bandai Nanko Entertainment Co., Ltd. and "Battlefield 3" by the American EA company. The video was uploaded to YouTube and other Kai KF-X fighter jet promotional websites a year ago and has earned more than 12,000 views to date.
In order to avoid further national embarrassment, everyone involved is unsurprisingly pointing fingers at one another. The Korean military passed the blame on the company that made the Kai KF-X fighter jet promotional video. Remarkably, the video producers were fast to evade their bets, stressing that both the Agency for Defence Development and Korea Aerospace Industries had the last words, says Engadget.
The unauthorized use of video clips from the games could lead to legal implications. It means that there is a big possibility for the Kai KF-X fighter jet to cost South Korea even more cash. Currently, neither "Battlefield" publisher EA nor "Ace Combat" publisher Namco Bandai has issued a comment on the matter.
The KF-X project is the new generation fighter development project that aims to replace the old fighter planes of the Air Force. In December 2014, the government allocated KRW 8,842.1 billion or approximately $8 million. It is estimated that the total business scale is close to 30 trillion won including the operating maintenance cost or $25.5 billion.
