The "Tomb Raider" gaming franchise was re-launched in 2013. Rhianna Pratchett, who had previously worked on Eidos Montreal's "Thief" reboot, gave the gaming world a Lara Croft that is much different from the previous ones. To understand why Lara is the way she is, Pratchett received instructions from game developer Crystal Dynamics and came up with a game that tells the story of the video game heroine's origin.
"We talked about Lara being depicted at a younger age," Pratchett told Eurogamer. "They had had a lot of feedback from fans who wanted to see the adventures of a younger Lara. So, they knew there was an appetite out there for it."
Pratchett did not want to depict yet another billionaire version of the character. "She was a bit more of a regular girl," she said. "She took on jobs to get herself through university." Pratchett's Lara "rejected her family's wealth" and tried to make it out in the world all by herself. As a plot twist, Lara gets shipwrecked on an island full of mad cultists.
Unfortunately, before the game was even released, it already had bad press coming its way. One of its trailers included a scene that showed how Lara Croft was physically assaulted by one of the island cultists. However, Pratchett stands behind her game narrative. "This is a situation she has to deal with and it leads to the first kill," she added. "It is not really about the guy's actions. It is about Lara's reactions."
Pratchett is no longer working on the "Tome Raider" game project, as reported by Cinema Blend. She had recently announced that she is officially leaving Crystal Dynamics, and allowing another writer to build on the character that she created, to pursue other endeavors for herself. Her version of "Tomb Raider" may have dealt with a lot of controversy, but in the end, it was a critical success.
