Recently, KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo said that Apple has interesting plans on upgrading MacBook and MacBook Pro models. In a note to investors, Chi-Kuo confirmed a selection of different upgrades for the 12 inches MacBook and the 13 and 15 inches MacBook Pro devices such as new processors and RAM increase for future owners.
With regard to the processors, the upcoming MacBook lineups will run the newly introduced 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake processors including the 12-inch MacBook Pro lineup and its mass production is expected to start in the Q2 this year. Furthermore, the MacBook will also get a 16 GB RAM option with the same basic aesthetic design, which was introduced in 2015, according to Apple Insider. The MacBook thin-and-light has a max of 8 GB RAM that limits its utility as a pro-machine.
Apple is expected to begin manufacturing the 15-inch MacBook Pro with an option of up to 32 GB RAM in the Q4 of this year and Chi-Kuo suggested that the Cupertino-based company will possibly adopt a desktop class RAM because of the current memory system designs restrictions. According to iPhone Hacks, this new machine targets high-end users as the company was previously criticized with its 16 GB memory on its latest MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models where Apple responded that its aim is to maximize battery life.
SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said that Apple decided to limit the RAM to 16 GB as any higher amount of memory will need a huge amount of memory controller, which is not suitable to use on portable machines. "To support 32GB of memory would require using DDR memory that is not low power and also require a different design of the logic board which might reduce space for batteries. Both factors would reduce battery life," he said.
Chi-Kuo also expects Apple to start mass production for the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro in the Q3 this year. It will, of course, run Intel's 7th-gen Kaby Lake processors.
