The Samsung Galaxy S3 is out on Verizon, but for those users who want to get literally into the phone, there's another option available: the Developer Edition. It's going to cost $600, though, and seems to be available exclusively from Samsung's Web site.
Samsung sent a question-and-answer e-mail to CNET explaining the device, most of which is below. The full transcript can be found over at CNET.
Who?
Samsung said it and Verizon "recognize that there are many enthusiasts and professional developers that are interested in customizing their device with third-party ROM software. Unlocking the bootloader can put the stability of the phone in jeopardy." The bootloader isn't unlocked by default on the device for Verizon, unlike other U.S. carriers.
Where?
The Developer Edition is available from Samsung, for $599. Verizon isn't stocking the Developer Edition, it seems.
Why?
Verizon locks the bootloader on the regular version of the Galaxy S3, now on sale, which Samsung said is to prevent users from negatively altering the experience through modifications. Software could also affect the wireless signal, Samsung added.
Therefore, the Developer Edition is aimed at developers and consumers who know the risks of hacking a device. It also won't void a warranty.
Samsung stated, however, that bricking a phone - in other words, causing it to not be responsive - "will not be covered by the warranty." Non-warranted Developer Edition Galaxy S3s can be sent for repair, but will cost users.
Reception
The Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 was delayed from July 10 to July 12 though pre-orders made before the delay weren't affected. The device has been successful thus far: 10 million pre-orders have been made, and the critical reception has been positive. The Verge said it is a "technological triumph" while The Daily Telegraph described the S3 a "worthy successor to the [Samsung Galaxy] S2."
However, criticism has been directed towards the "cheap" design, and the voice recognition technology - S Voice - being inferior to Apple's Siri which the feature has been compared against. There has also been criticism towards the pre-installed apps.
