The Facebook iOS app - which has been consistently criticized by users because of its slow speed and frequent endless loading - will reportedly be revamped to focus on speed. Facebook released the Camera app, which has been described as very responsive.

The Facebook app has 38,000 reviews on the iOS App Store and 21,000 awarded a one-star rating, the lowest, citing the aforementioned complaints.

Two Facebook engineers speaking to The New York Times claim the app will be revamped and re-released in July with the focus on speed. The engineers remained anonymous.

"One of the Facebook engineers said the new application has been built primarily using Objective-C, the programming language used to build applications on iOS," The New York Times reported. The current Facebook app uses HTML5.

The New York Times also saw the new Facebook app and said it was "blazing fast," and it's currently being tested by Facebook developers ahead of a release during the "summer." The design hasn't changed; the app has already gone under a major revision.

A reason the app has slowed down is because features have been added to the app while HTML5 was being used, which was designed to reduce the workload for developers. According to The New York Times, engineering manager at Facebook David Fetterman said as much.

"Objective-C takes ... full advantage of the hardware of the iPhone ... building most of the functionality directly into the application so it has to collect less information from the Web," The New York Times added.

The report likened the current Facebook app to a "Smart Car inside the shell of a Ferrari," suggesting the design is already designed for speed but the underlying components simply aren't good enough.

Facebook Camera is an app dedicated to showing photos from Friends on the social network, similar to Facebook Messenger which is exclusively for chatting without using the app.

The Facebook Web site isn't great on performance, either: it can be slow to load, and uploading photos can only be done individually.
