Hardly after a month after acquiring the photo sharing app Instagram, Facebook has released its own Instagram-like app dubbed Facebook Camera, making it the fourth iPhone app by the social networking giant. The app is intended to capture photos, apply filters and batch upload photos to Facebook Timeline.
With the new app, Facebook users can easily capture, upload, tag, view, manage and comment on photos. Inspired by Instagram, Facebook Camera features its own array of filters. When first opening the app, it automatically detects any Facebook account associated with user's iPhone. As you are done with the account linking, you will see nothing like Facebook in the app's user interface. There is a New Feed which consists only of photos that either you or your friends have uploaded. You can launch the camera directly or even select up to 30 photos to upload simultaneously. Tapping on the photo will give you options like rotate, crop and apply filters.
Compared to Instagram, the filter choice in Facebook Camera app is limited to just 14 filters. However, we can expect Facebook to add more filters to the app with upcoming app updates. Facebook Camera app is available on the iTunes Store as a free download. An Android version could also be expected in near future.
In spite of spending a hefty $1 billion on Instagram, Facebook is just rolling out a new Instagram-like app, which seems a bit odd. The app has been released just a few weeks after the Instagram acquisition indicating that it was in development long before the deal was broken with folks at Instagram.
The social networking giant is simply trying to port the features of Instagram to its own app with added functionality, which might mean "The End" for Instagram. Facebook is probably combining the two app into one or you can say, giving a "Facebook" name to Instagram. We will not be surprised at the disappearance of Instagram from the App store, after all the features get ported to the standalone camera app.
