4K gaming is the pinnacle of graphics on current gaming trend and more developers are hitching in the bandwagon after PlayStation 4 Pro was unleashed. However, this also prompted a nice debate over the console's capability to handle the stress of 4K gaming, especially if this mid-generation console can really handle true 4K standard.
The truth behind PlayStation 4 Pro 4K capabilities was exposed according to Tarsier Studio boss Dave Mervik when they worked on "Little Nightmares." This iteration is to unveil for PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and PC. Mervik said in a GamingBolt interview that Sony made PlayStation 4 Pro with increased bandwidth but sports basically the same RAM as that of predecessor PS4. Yes, game developers are allotted a bit more RAM but could this pose a challenge on achieving real 4K?
Mervik explained that bandwidth tradeoff may affect when running 4K but a necessary decision for PlayStation 4 Pro. On the technical perspective, tradeoff is apparent when doubling-up the GPU power of PlayStation 4 Pro. After all, this extra GPU muscle is essential to smoothly pull off a 30fps or even higher frame rate in 4K, ExtremeTech said. Mervik believes that Sony has in mind the seamless gameplay for 4K-capable PlayStation 4 Pro.
Loking at PlayStation 4 Pro in developer's perspective, the console gave a lot of flexibility to pull off the trick of running 4K. Remember that most games jumping into PS4 Pro trail don't run their titles in native 4K. The workaround for this is to use special technique known as checkerboard 4K rendering.
At any rate, gamers have to consider that PlayStation 4 Pro is an initial step towards 4K gaming. If anybody wants to push 4K to its native state, Microsoft's Xbox Project Scorpio might be the better choice. After all, the tech giant themselves claim that Scorpio is going to be the only console to run native 4K for current AAA games, come 2017.
