Google will launch a couple of new flagship models running on the Android Wear 2.0 soon. Google is said to be partnering with other manufacturers to create several new smartwatches.
The Verge wrote that Jeff Chang, product manager of Android Wear at Google, stated that Google will release two new flagship smartwatches in the first quarter of 2017. The new watches will reportedly be the flagship Android Wear 2.0 devices to showcase the new platform. Google's recent announcement is part of a bigger attempt to convince consumers that smartwatches are still popular.
The upcoming Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches will allegedly not include Google or Pixel branding, but will be branded by the manufacturing company. Google worked with an unnamed manufacturer that has produced Android Wear before. The partnership focused on the hardware design and software of the Android Wear 2.0 devices, which Chang compared to Google's Nexus smartphone program.
The watches that will be upgraded to Android Wear 2.0 in 2017 are the Moto 360 Sport, Moto 360 Gen 2, LG G Watch R, LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, LG Watch Urbane, Nixon Mission, Casio Smart Outdoor Watch, Polar M600, Fossil Q Wander, Fossil Q Founder, and Fossil Q Marshal. The Tag Heuer Connected, Michael Kors Access Bradshaw Smartwatch, Michael Kors Access Dylan Smartwatch, Huawei Watch, Huawei Watch Ladies, Asus ZenWatch 2 and Asus ZenWatch 3 will also be upgraded to Android Wear 2.0 soon.
MacRumors stated that the new Android Wear 2.0 platform delivers new features like standalone apps that do not need a phone to function, Android Pay support, Google Assistant support and more. Google will launch the fifth and final developer preview of Android Wear 2.0 in January 2017 which will also work on iOS products, although there will be some differences. Other Google partners will reportedly release new devices with Android Wear 2.0 through 2017.
The first Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches will most likely be unveiled at CES 2017 in January, with more coming at the Baselworld trade show. The new Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches are expected to compete with the Apple Watch, which is still the best selling smartwatch. More updates and details on Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches are expected soon.
