Square Enix has just announced the Japanese release date for "Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue" in a new trailer.

The new trailer was shown during Sony's Playstation Conference. The remastered bundle, which was supposed to come out in December, now has a Japanese release date of Jan. 12, 2017, with the North American and European versions arriving 12 days later.

The game was originally scheduled for a worldwide release, However, according to Square Enix USA on Twitter, the North American and European release will be after 12 days, Jan. 24.

This was also contrary to what "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" co-director Tai Yasue's statement earlier this year.

"We're excited about Kingdom Hearts III, but II.8 we're releasing globally at the beginning of December," Yasue told VentureBeat in an interview.

Unfortunately, Square Enix have apparently missed its original target date for "Kingdom Hearts 2.8." There were speculations that the release of "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" was affected by the recent delay of another anticipated Square Enix game, "Final Fantasy XV," which was moved from its original Sept. 30 date to Nov. 29.

This also led to speculations that the long wait for "Kingdom Hearts 3" will be extended as well, with fans predicting a 2018 or later release date for the highly anticipated title.

Since "Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue" would not be out until January, fans should expect no new details for the much awaited "Kingdom Hearts 3" until around February 2017 onwards.

"Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue" is touted to be a primer for "Kingdom Hearts 3," and will include three chapters which will prepare the players for the upcoming sequel.

The first one is called "Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage". The playable chapter features Aqua, one of the first wielders of the Keyblade, and her fight against the Heartless.

Also included in "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" is the 3D movie "Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover", which tells the story of the Foretellers, which might have had a bigger role in the Keyblade War. The Foretellers appeared in Square Enix's new mobile game "Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ".

The main chapter in the game will be the HD remaster of "Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance", which was originally released on Nintendo 3DS.

Stay tuned for more "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" and "Kingdom Hearts 3" news.
