Apple enthusiasts will have to wait until 2026 for the iPhone 18 series since there's no way the Cupertino giant will skip an iPhone model. But, rumors have already been suggesting a major camera upgrade.
Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the company is reportedly going to fit the iPhone 18 Pro models with a variable aperture main camera, something that has been offered by its competitors Samsung and Xiaomi for some time now.
Variable Aperture of iPhone 18 Pro: What to Expect
Recently, Kuo spoke about what Apple is planning with the iPhone 17's successor. As per a report by Gadgets 360, the tech giant will introduce the variable aperture, but not to all models. Specifically, it's intended alone for the premium variants, the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
What's more, this technology works like magic for mobile photographers who love adjusting the aperture depending on the environment. It's also meant to improve the quality of pictures in low-lit places.
Who Will Supply Apple For iPhone 18 Series's Camera?
The camera upgrade will depend on suppliers like Sunny Optical, as Kuo's recent industry analysis confirmed. Sunny Optical will be the primary supplier of shutter mechanisms and Luxshare will be second while variable aperture lens will be supplied by Largan Precision.
It is important in bringing into play Apple's next-generation camera technology, particularly because designing a variable aperture is complex.
Delayed Camera Innovation: iPhone 17 to iPhone 18
According to the latest reports from Kuo, the variable aperture will debut with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and not in 2025 with the iPhone 17 lineup as reported by earlier rumors.
Although it would be a long wait for the enthusiasts, the huge resources the company is investing for the refinement and introduction of this same technology in 2026 indicate that Apple may be taking a cautious approach—one which may assure them of having a very smooth experience of great quality.
Variable Aperture in Other Apple Rivals
Variable aperture technology is not a new thing for smartphones. Samsung made it popular with its Galaxy S9 lineup back in 2018, and Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor already copied this technology as well. Adjustment allows further fine-tuning to light capture so it can take pictures with pretty sharp images even brightened up or dimmed.
Low Light Shots and Depth Control Improvement
Jumping photography to the variable aperture, the feature provides much more light entering a sensor so that one will be able to capture shots in low-light scenes. It also lets the user have better control over the depth allowing for sharper portraits and drawing the viewer's eye better.
iPhone 18 Pro Rumors So Far
In another report by Apple Insider, the iPhone 18 Pro is believed to feature a 2nm processor. The information came from the same insider, Kuo in September.
On top of that, fans speculate if the iPhone 18 Pro will finally add the under-screen Face ID. It's a convenient addition for those who hate the notch.
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup promises to be one of the most technologically advanced yet, going by that more details are expected to roll out in the coming months.
