With the runaway success of Nintendo and Niantic Labs' augmented-reality game "Pokemon GO," it is not a surprising thought that others would follow suit. "Digimon" is the game's fiercest rival, but would it be as effective in an AR game?
Picture this: A player checks his phone and sees a beacon on his map. He runs towards it hoping to catch the elusive creature. But when he gets there, he sees... an Agumon, all ready to be taken by its new owner.
The age-old debate between which is the better monster franchise has dragged on longer than people would want to care about. With that said, however, "Digimon" fans might like the idea of a "Digimon GO," whether "Pokemon" got to it first or not.
The possibility of "Digimon GO" was not a new idea. In fact, a lot of "Digimon" fan forums have already considered the thought, even before "Pokemon GO" went live.
"Anyone else feel like the concept of real world and virtual world mixing with 'Pokemon GO' would work even better maybe for Digimon?" a user on the Digimon Heroes forum asked. "I hope we get a Digital World Go, would be awesome."
Another user, this time from the Bandai Namco forums said that it would be a great format for a "Digimon" game.
"'Cyber Sleuth' around, using your phone to see 'Rifts' between the human and digital world to spot Digimon using the device from the CS game to catch a Digimon to be your partner." user Metamon wrote sometime last year.
"Then, you go around scanning rifts for 'Digicode' to soon make another partner to help."
While some agreed that the concept will be perfect for a "Digimon" game, others are a bit skeptical about the idea.
One forumer called the concept "gimmicky," and might download the game, play it for a few days then delete it afterwards.
With the risk of being called a "Pokemon GO" clone, most Digifans would still agree that the same concept for a "Digimon"game will certainly work. Everyone agreed as well that they would definitely play the game, as long as it does not turn into a pay-to-win cash grabbing game in the long run.
