It's confirmed: the "Skyrim" remaster is real. Bethesda will be releasing the HD version of one of its most popular franchise, "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" later this year.

The game publisher announced the release of the "Skyrim Special Edition" during its press conference at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3. The surprise announcement was made immediately after the updates for its other popular game, "Fallout 4."

The trailer showed visual comparisons between the last-gen consoles (Playstation 3 and Xbox 360) and the new-gen consoles (Playstation 4 and Xbox One), and the short clip showed some dramatic improvements from the previous ones, Gamespot reports.

The remastered version will also come with impressive new visual effects, including Volumetric God Rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections, and new snow and water shaders.

Another important feature is the addition of mod support for consoles, just like what Bethesda has done for "Fallout 4" recently.

The announcement was a pleasant surprise for "Elder Scrolls" fans, but on the other hand, it was also highly anticipated, with all the rumors spreading around prior to Bethesda's E3 show.

A lot of news outlets, including IGN, have reported that rumors about the "Skyrim" remaster was confirmed by insider Shinobi602 during two separate podcasts.

The original release of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" in 2011 was met with much fanfare, getting mostly favorable reviews from across all platforms from review aggregator Metacritic. The original release also garnered multiple acknowledgements and awards from different bodies, including Gamespot's "PC Game of the Year" and Spike TV's "RPG of the Year".

The developers at Bethesda Game Studios confirmed on its Twitter page that "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" is something that they have wanted to do for a long time, and that is to return to a world that they have grown to love.

The developers also confirmed that players who own either the original "Skyrim" and all its add-ons or the Legendary Edition on Steam will get a free upgrade to "Skyrim Special Edition" when it launches later this year.

The "Skyrim Special Edition" will be released in Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28.
