Google's mission to expand their internet coverage to connect four billion people who still doesn't have web connectivity, has unveiled their ambitious project involving the usage of helium balloons at a press conference held in California. Known as Project Loon, this project will see Google attempting to boost rural Indonesia's Internet access with the help of the helium balloons.
The project aims to improve Southeast Asian nation's internet connectivity with the help of telecom companies Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Inmost, which are some of Indonesia's top telecom firms. Google's Project Loon will attempt to get two-thirds of Indonesia's population to have internet connectivity as it is said that only about 29% Indonesians has access to the internet at the present, majority of which are also slow. Google is hoping that within five years they will be able to deliver LTE speed connections to more than 100 million people in Indonesia.
Google announced that they will have 12 testing months for the balloons before they will be officially introducing them publicly. Once they succeed, the balloons will enable Indonesians to connect to the web through their mobile phones. Project Loon's Indonesian tests will be a part of the foundation for their long term goal which is to bring the internet to millions of users no matter where they are.
Project Loon's launch in Indonesia, will be the fourth test for the balloons as it has been first tried in Australia, Brazil, and New Zealand which was also done in partnership with local carriers of each country.
Project Loon was first unveiled as part of the Google X department on June 2013 in New Zealand. From that time till the present, designers were able to find ways to increase the balloon's range of connectivity and make the balloons easier to launch. Other Australian and Sri Lankan companies have also signed up to have balloon-driven internet access.
