Microsoft reportedly aims to take the wraps off its next-generation Surface Pro 4 tablet as soon as this month, at an upcoming event.
The company's BUILD 2015 developer conference is focusing on software, as expected, but the Surface Pro 4 unveiling may be just around the corner.
According to a new report from Slashgear, citing an anonymous source, Microsoft will host a special event later this month to reveal the highly-anticipated Surface Pro 4. The source pegs the unveiling for mid-May, without mentioning any specific date.
Slashgear further notes that it has not had "extensive experience" with this source before, but it does believe that Microsoft will indeed introduce the Surface Pro 4 this month.
Considering that the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (pictured above) made its debut on May 20 last year, it would make sense for the Surface Pro 4 to arrive around the same time this year. Consequently, a mid-May unveiling sounds quite plausible.
While nothing is official at this point, the Surface Pro 4 also appeared in an extensive leak recently, revealing some details about its specifications. According to that leak, the next-generation Surface Pro 4 tablet will come with a 12-inch display with the same resolution of the Surface Pro 3, i.e. 2160 x 1440 pixels.
Under the hood, however, the Surface Pro 4 will reportedly rock a fifth-generation Intel (Broadwell) Core i-series processor, delivering the processing power of a true laptop. The tablet is expected to come with accessories compatible with the previous generation, which means a Type 3 Cover and a third-generation Docking Station. An N-Trig Surface Pen should also be in the mix.
The upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is further tipped to feature a fanless design, but have the same vent holes as previous models in order to allow heat to dissipate when accumulating within.
Lastly, the design of the Surface Pro 4 will reportedly be thinner than that of the Surface Pro 3, but otherwise the two generations will share several features. The leak noted that the new iteration could have the same battery, ports, and kickstand as its predecessor.
It remains unclear at this point just when exactly the Surface Pro 4 will make its official debut, but it should be very soon if this report turns out to be accurate. For now, however, take all leaks and reports with a grain of salt.
