Google has officially taken the wraps off its new Motorola Nexus 6 as expected, unveiling an impressive smartphone powerhouse with high-end specs and features.
The Motorola Nexus 6 had leaked extensively ahead of its formal debut, and now we have the official scoop regarding Google's new flagship smartphone. The Nexus 6 is the first Nexus to come from Motorola, and is also the very first phablet in the lineup.
As the phablet trend is increasingly gaining momentum, there's little doubt left that super-sized smartphones are widely successful. Even Apple gave in to this trend and launched a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, and now Google comes with the 5.96-inch Nexus 6.
The large display of the Nexus 6 also joins the QHD elite, boasting a stunning resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. In terms of design, the Nexus 6 seems to confirm earlier rumors, as it basically looks like a larger Moto X, complete with a "contoured aluminum frame."
Under the hood, the smartphone packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and paired with Adreno 420 graphics, but Google has yet to mention how much RAM will back it up. The handset should feature at least 2GB of RAM, if not 3GB, but it remains to be seen.
When it comes to internal storage capacity, the Motorola Nexus 6 will be available in 32GB or 64GB configurations, with no mention of microSD so far. In the photography department, the handset sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), dual LED flash ring, and 4K video recording, as well as a 2-megapixel front shooter.
The Nexus 6 further boasts a large 3,200 mAh battery that should last for 24 hours on average, and comes with Motorola's new Turbo Charge feature that allows users to get up to six hours of use from just 15 minutes of charging. Qi wireless charging is also on board for extra convenience. The smartphone also comes with water resistance certification, but Google has not mentioned the exact rating just yet.
On the software side, as expected, the Nexus 6 rocks the very latest Android 5.0 Lollipop, the fastest and greatest Android version to date. Android 5.0 Lollipop brings notable performance enhancements and optimizations across the board, as well as neat visual enhancements and Google's new Material Design, among others.
The new Motorola Nexus 6 will go up for pre-order in late October unlocked from the Google Play Store and will be available in black and white color options, but won't actually hit stores until November. The handset will also be available subsidized on a monthly contract or installment plan through carriers, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular.
