Anticipation is building up ahead of the HTC Nexus 9 launch, with more sources bolstering claims of a mid-October debut.
Google has yet to launch a new Nexus device this year, but the company is expected to unveil a large-screen tablet, as well as a smartphone, in the near future. Reports started to pile up as of late in regards to a Google Nexus 9 tablet from HTC, which would revive the partnership between the two companies. HTC made the original Nexus One for Google, but other OEMs have since handled the rest of the devices in the Nexus lineup.
The HTC-made Google Nexus 9 is widely expected to make its debut next month, serving as a launch vehicle for the much-touted Android L version of Google's popular mobile operating system. While some earlier reports pegged the tablet's launch for Oct. 8 or 9, more recently it came to light that the Nexus 9 would in fact debut one week later, on Oct. 15 or 16.
An exclusive new report from Android Authority now claims to have more information regarding the upcoming Google Nexus 9 tablet made in collaboration with HTC. Moreover, the report also mentions the next-generation Nexus smartphone, which is expected to come from Motorola. The smartphone has leaked on several occasions so far with the codename "Shamu," and is also believed to debut shortly. The handset is rumored to launch as the Nexus X, as the Nexus 6 branding would pose some copyright infringement issues.
"Thanks to two different sources familiar with Google's plans, we have learned that the HTC Nexus 9 will be unveiled on either October 15th or the 16th. Additionally there is mention of new phone hardware (possibly the rumored Moto Nexus?) and the unveiling of a 'new software initiative,' which likely refers to Android L's final release," the publication revealed in a report on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Android Authority's sources further revealed that although Android L and the new Nexus hardware (tablet and smartphone) will debut in mid-October, Google won't release the final version of its new OS version until Nov. 1. At the same time, the publication points out that it remains unclear at this point whether the new Nexus hardware with Android L will also hit retail or start shipping on Nov. 1, or whether that date actually refers to when existing Nexus devices will get the update.
Lastly, the publication claims to be "rather confident" of the accuracy of this information, but reckons that dates can change and there's always a chance that leaked info proves to be false. As always in such cases, it's best to take all leaks, rumors and speculation with a grain of salt.
